What is Banned Books Week?
Banned books week is an annual event that has been happening since 1982. The American Library Association (ALA) highlights the ongoing fight against censorship, while promoting access and the ability to choose what you want to read during this awareness week.
Our library participates by putting up displays, promoting and checking out banned books, and handing out bookmarks or other promo. This year we will have a Banned Books Week Carnival, keep reading for more details!
The top three reasons why books are challenged or banned:
- Material is considered to be sexually explicit
- Material contained offensive language
- Material was unsuited to any age group
