Definition and purpose of an annotated bibliography

An annotated bibliography is a list of sources you’ve gathered for a research paper or project. Each source is formatted in a specific citation style. Under each source, you include an annotation—a short paragraph that usually includes the following: a summary of the source, your evaluation of its quality, and a reflection of how you might use it in your work.

The annotated bibliography can be used for a number of different reasons.

  • To have a record of your research.
  • Understand the sources that you have chosen.
  • To analyze and think critically about your sources.
  • To determine if you see patterns in your sources.
  • To think about how to use what you discover in your sources as support for your ideas.
  • Develop a strong argument based on your research.
