Research isn't linear. Students need to navigate a series of tasks to get through the research process and they often revisit earlier stages of the process as needed. This process evokes a range of emotions for students. Carol Kuhlthau, a noted educator and librarian, has studied how students research and in 1993 created the Information Search Process (ISP) model below. This model identifies research tasks and the accompanying feelings students typically experience.
By looking at this model we can see that there are a range of emotions for student researchers. Kulthau's process on research shows that with some added assistance, or intervention, the student can progress to the next stage of the search process. It is helpful for students to know that they are not alone on their research journey. Understanding that these feelings are a normal part of the process can provide reassurance and encourage persistence. Additionally, educators and librarians can play a crucial role in supporting students through these stages, offering guidance and resources to help them navigate the complexities of research.
